Qualification purpose

This qualification is aimed those looking to undertake the role of an emergency first aider in a forestry context as required by the Forestry Commission. The qualification also meets the requirements for emergency First aid at work as outlined in the Health and Safety (First-aid) Regulations 1981.

Pre-requisites

This qualification is aimed at those over 16 who are working on forestry commission land.


Candidates between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however they should not be relied upon by

employers to be a sole first aider.

It is recommended that candidates have a minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or equivalent.

Attendees will be required to demonstrate first aid procedures as they would in a real work environment.

This includes providing CPR to a casualty who is on the floor, therefore be physically capable of doing so.


There are no other pre-requisites for this qualification.


Course Content


A range of subjects are covered in unit 1 including:


  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a forestry first aider
  • Be able to assess and manage an incident in an outdoor environment
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty that is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty that is unresponsive and is breathing normally
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who has been bitten or stung
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis


A range of subjects are covered in unit 2 including:

  • Be able to conduct a secondary survey in a forestry setting
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones,muscles and joints in a forestry context
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness in a forestry context
